By using sun’s energy power plants based on concentrated solar power generates electricity on industrial scale. As solar radiations are concentrated optically, they generate very high temperatures for process of power plant. This high temperature is stored and is used to produce electricity on requirement. This is an important benefit of this technology. Economic working of solar thermal power plants depends on high proportion of solar radiation: so these are used typically in areas receiving high solar radiations like North Africa, Southern Europe and Southwest U.S.A. As there is a wide scope for market development, many solar power plants and parabolic are in planning of getting constructed. In the year 2013, approximately 60 power plants (solar thermal) were started across the world. These together produce approx. 3,200 Mega Watt. And right now around 40 such plants are under construction.

Technologies and applications

The basic and common rule on which solar power plants work is the use of parabolic dish systems in the vast solar fields which concentrate the solar radiations on the receiver. In order to get concentrated direct radiation all systems need to track these systems. All the radiations are converted in a special receiver system and then at the temperatures ranging from 200 to 1,000 °C into thermal energy. With the use of gas turbines & stream, this thermal energy can be converted into electric power. If the need arises this energy can be used in industrial procedures like cooling of water, water desalination and hydrogen production.

With this principle, this becomes a characteristic of solar thermal power plants that the generated heat can be easily stored in an inexpensive manner. And so it can also be used for generating electricity at night and in evening. Through this we can make decision, for producing energy for the future generation.

A difference has been attempted between linear and dish concentrator systems. There are four different configurations among these systems.

LINEAR CONCENTRATOR SYSTEMS

Parabolic trough plants

Several parallel rows of collectors are contained by a solar field of parabolic trough plant. These rows contain parabolic curved dishes which radiate sunlight onto an absorber tube that runs along a focal line and produce temperature as high as 400 °C. Generated heat is absorbed and stream at a temperature of is 390 °C is created in a heat exchanger by circulating thermal oil by heat carrier. The created steam is used drive the stream and a generator is used to generated electricity like in traditional power plants.

Fresnel Collectors

Slightly curved and long, flat mirrors radiates all the energy received onto a fixed absorber tube making water heat and vaporize. If compared to parabolic trough, the investment is low in these as reflecting surface is less because of simple concept while consumption efficiency is less. In Spanish province of Murcia, two Fresnel power plants are set up with total capacity of 31 MV.

DISH CONCENTRATOR SYSTEMS

Solar Towers

In solar towers, radiations from hundreds of dishes positioned automatically are concentrated upon a central absorber fixed on the top of the receiver. The higher concentration of sunlight in comparison to parabolic trough collectors, allows higher temperatures up to 1,000 °C. This results in greater efficiency especially when gas turbines are used and leads to less cost of electricity.
The first commercial solar power plant of this sort was established in Europe with an installed capacity of 10 MV. It was commission in Seville, Spain in 2007. Another solar power plant supplemented it in 2009. Gemasolar tower plant got connected to the grid in 2011 of Seville. It employs thermal molten salt storage system and has capacity of 20 MV. This province has electricity across the clock in the summer season.

Dish / Stirling Systems

A paraboloid dish is used in dish/Stirling systems for concentrating the radiations of sun upon the heat absorber that then converts thermal energy into electricity/ mechanical power. Efficiency level of over 30% has been achieved. At Plataforma Systems there are prototype systems, e.g. in Spain these plants are found suitable like stand-alone systems. Possibility of interconnecting various individual systems to produce solar farm is also offered by it. This meets the demand for electricity from 10 KW to several MW.
